CHINA TO EXPAND REHABILITATION SERVICES AMID RISING DEMAND

China will create more rehabilitation service providers to meet rising demand, and encourage qualified county, district and city hospitals to convert their facilities into rehabilitation centers, according to Ma Xiaowei, vice minister of health.

CHINA EYES BUILDING A COMPREHENSIVE TRANSPORT NETWORK

In March, the Chinese government announced a plan to further improve nationwide transportation with ten massive transportation routes crisscrossing the country taking form by 2015, as well as a high-speed railway network and a state-level expressway network.

CHINESE STUDENTS TO BRITAIN ALERTED ABOUT VISA CHANGES

CHINA TO BE HOTBED OF LUXURY HOTELS

Sanya, the southernmost city in China seeks to reinvent itself as the “Miami of the East” as part of a plan to attract more tourists from home and abroad. Plans now exist to complete 40 five-star hotels in five years in a 19-kilometer stretch of Haitang Bay in Sanya. According to reports, half of them will open before 2015, almost doubling the number of hotels in the city.

GOV’T SET TO ESTABLISH FOOD SAFETY PROGRAM

China may have a national electronic food-safety tracking system in place by the end of the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-15), helping make food safer and market regulation easier, according to Sun Pishu, CEO of the Chinese information-technology company Inspur Group Co Ltd and a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference National Committee.

Editor’s note: According to a previous China Daily report, a poll on the official website of the CPPCC Beijing Committee suggested that food safety holds seventh place on a list of 15 matters that are of major concern to Chinese Internet users. Food scandals have expanded from milk, yogurt to even medicine. Food safety is an issue drawing rising public attention, and there is growing public outcry for the government to enhance regulation of the food market. A food-safety tracking system from which detailed production information is available for consumers may be useful for improving the current situation.

EXODUS TO OVERSEAS UNIVERSITIES RISES

Applicants for overseas universities continued to rise in Shanghai in 2011, due to locals’ desire for an international education and lower cost brought about by the yuan’s appreciation. Nearly 12,500 students from the city headed overseas to study last year, 6 percent more than in 2010. The United States topped the destinations list, according to the Shanghai Education Commission.
